Little Norway
Elevated view of the tourist attraction Little Norway, situated in an idyllic valley, with the stave church in the center and a small house at right. There is a picket fence in the foreground and a person on the lawn, likely pushing a mower, at center right. The stave church, with its wooden shingles and carved dragons at the gable ends, was originally built in Orkdal, Norway and transported to Chicago for the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition. It was then moved to the Wrigley Estate at Lake Geneva. In 1935 Isak Dahle purchased the building and moved it to the town of Blue Mounds. It was the centerpiece of Little Norway until that attraction closed in 2014. A group of Norwegians from Orkdal purchased the church, disassembled it, and transported it back to Norway. The rebuilt church was dedicated and opened to the public in September, 2017. |
