Carriage of Daniel Webster
Carriage of Daniel Webster on display at the Wisconsin State Historical Museum, circa 1910-20. Formally displayed at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago in the Historical Department of the Transportation Building, it remained on loan by Fletcher Webster at the WHS museum for the next twenty-three years, gaining popularity as "easily the most widely known historical relic in the Northwest" (Proceedings of the Society at its Sixty-Fourth Annual Meeting, Held October 19, 1916," 1917, p. 69). It was originally purchased in London in 1808, by a Bostonian, and then owned of Daniel Webster. According to the museum catalog record, "Martin Van Buren, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, Silas Wright, Charlotte Cushman, Dean Richmond, Erastus Corning and many other notables of Daniel Webster's day, have ridden in this carriage." |
