Glander Art Studio & Glander Style Shop

Glander Art Studio & Glander Style Shop | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
View across intersection towards the Glander Art Studio and the Glander Style Shop on the northeast corner of S. 9th and Washington Streets. Second-story windows are accented with flower boxes, and striped awnings are lowered above storefront windows. Built in 1914 to house John Glander's photography studio, art and giftware store, the Glander Building's original doors, one on the far-left corner and the main door on the canted, front corner, have been closed in with brick. A new entrance has been constructed, facing Washington Street, midway between the store's display windows on the right. John Glander purchased the adjacent building at 820 Washington Street for expansion in 1922. The Romanesque Revival-style building, dating to 1895, was adjoined to the art studio and remodeled with a modern storefront and interior. It opened as the Glander Hat Shop with Hattie Glander, John's sister, proprietor. By 1928, it was known as the Glander Style Shop with John's brother, William, proprietor. William was also employed by John as a photographer and manager of the Glander Art Studio. On the far right, at 818 Washington Street, is Morris Alpert's shoe and men's furnishings store. On the left, a sign on the back of the two-story building advertises Henry Esch Sons Co. department store. The Schuette Bros. Co.'s water tank is in the distance.
