View of the Glander Style Shop's storefront entrance at 820 Washington Street featuring a twelve-feet-deep French window, tile floor, and heavy, ornate door. Women's summer dresses, hats and hosiery are on display. Window signs state: "Glander's Coats" and "Glander's Dresses." Newspaper ads offer ready-to-wear coats, dresses, hats, hosiery, brasiers, rayon underwear, nightgowns and pajamas for women and misses. John Glander purchased the building east of the Glander Art Studio for expansion of his business in 1922. It had been the site of Henry Bode's Manitowoc Steam Cleaning and Dying Works since 1903 and, for the last few years, Bode's Millinery Shop. After being remodeled, it opened as Glander's Hat Shop with John's sister, Hattie, who had prior millinery experience, as the proprietor of the shop. By 1927-'28 it was known as Glander's Style Shop. His brother William, was the proprietor, as well as being employed by John as a photographer and manager of the Glander Art Studio. The shop closed in 1931 so that both brothers could devote all of their attention to the increasing demands of the photography business. The shop space was, then, rented. The first occupant was Egan Apparel Shop in 1931. From the 1930's — early 1960's, other occupants were Pasewalk's, Smart Frocks, Jensen's and Houston's. All were women's apparel stores. |
