Bach 3-CT-4 with Comet 7-RA Engines
Three-quarter view from front left towards a trimotor Bach 3-CT-4 manufactured by the Bach Aircraft Company of Santa Monica, California. The company was formed in 1927 by L. Morton Bach, an aviator whose unique line of Air Yachts was constructed almost entirely of wood with steel fittings, undercarriage and struts. The 3-CT-4 Air Yacht, typical of this line, was a high-wing cantilever monoplane powered by a large engine in the nose of the aircraft and two smaller "helper" engines under the wings in nacelles. It was powered by one Pratt & Whitney Wasp 450 hp air-cooled engine and two Comet 100 hp (112 kW) engines, originally designed by the Comet Engine Corporation in 1928. The plane, with registration number 7092, is parked at Hangar No. 1 on the Oakland air field. Unseen decal text on the body reads: "West Coast Air Transport, Co. Owned and Operated by Union Air Lines." This W.C.A.T. Co. was incorporated in Portland, Oregon in 1928 to offer scheduled passenger and cargo flights over a multi-stop route from Seattle down to San Francisco. |
