Holy Family Hospital, Operating Room

Holy Family Hospital, Operating Room | Book or Pamphlet | Wisconsin Historical Society
View of the brightly lit, tiled floor operating room. Cast-iron furniture includes an operating table, with a slanted central opening for drainage of fluids into a basin below. An I.V. stand with glass bottles is next to a wall-mounted telephone and wash basins. The following has been quoted from the hospital's 1902 patient booklet: "The third floor is the surgical department. The operating room is on this floor, and special care has been exercised in its construction, looking to perfect arrangement for the latest and most approved methods in up-to-date surgery. It is lighted by a sky-light and large plate-glass windows. The floor is of vitrified tile with a base of the same material. Adjoining the operating rooms are the anesthetic and sterilizing rooms, and well equipped dressing rooms for the surgeons and nurses. This floor also has a well arranged room for the dressing of all surgical cases, and was constructed with a special view to surgical cleanliness. A number of pleasant private rooms occupy the remaining space on this floor."
