The U.S. Highway 2 overpass spans two sets of railroad tracks that cross beneath at Ashland Junction. One railroad line belongs to the Northern Pacific Railroad and the other line belongs to the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha (Omaha Road) Railroad. Located about a mile west of the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center and west of Ashland. On the morning of December 31st, 1946, a collision occured between an eastbound Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic freight train with 26 loads and an Omaha double-header with 35 cars. An engineer, Ralph Carlson, was killed in the accident.
DESCRIPTION
