Quarter-length studio portrait of Arthur J. Packard, an early Manitowoc photographer known for views of the area, its people, harbor and marine vessels from about 1880-1910.  A.J. "Jay" Packard (1853-1918) was employed in A.B. Melendy's photography business for several years as a young man. In 1882, the two formed the partnership of Melendy & Packard with a studio at 919 S. 8th St. on the second floor, above the F.C. Buerstatte Drug Store. Melendy left to open a new studio in 1899, while Packard remained at the old location until selling his business to George F. Becker in 1910. In his later years, he assisted in the studio of John A. Glander who had been his young apprentice and to whom he had taught the profession.
DESCRIPTION
Quarter-length studio portrait of Arthur J. Packard, an early Manitowoc photographer known for views of the area, its people, harbor and marine vessels from about 1880-1910. A.J.
