Ceska Slovanska Lipa Opera House Interior | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
View of the main ballroom of the New Opera House following remodeling. Wreathed cupids and decorative scrollwork embellish the tiered boxes, ceiling and walls. Behind the arched proscenium, is a depiction of the National Theatre in Prague, the Narodni Divadlo, on the stage backdrop. John Buran, an immigrant from Prague, was the proprietor, ca. 1940's. The Ceska Slovanska Lipa Opera House at 411 N. 8th Street was completed by 1889. It was the cultural center of immigrants from Bohemia and Slovakia, now known as the Czech Republic. The building, with a lower-level saloon, was used by its members and the public for events such as holiday programs, Sokol gymnastics exhibitions, school graduations, masquerade and military balls, traveling company shows, band concerts, music clubs, dance classes, car shows, poultry exhibits, wrestling, legitimate theater and silent movies. In its later years, it was the site of a coffee house and a venue for rock bands. The building was razed in 1975.
