Baba Hannibal Tirus Afrik

Waist-up portrait of Baba Hannibal Tirus Afrik, sent to an unnamed son for Kwanzaa 1972. Afrik was a school teacher and a leader in the creation of African culture-centered independent institutions in Chicago. In the year this photograph was taken, he had created Shule YA Watoto (school for children) on the west side of Chicago, which would be a self-sufficient school for more than 30 years. On the photograph's front, Afrik has written: "To My Young Warrior, Kwanzaa 72." On the back he has written" "'If I return I shall kiss you, But if I fall, I shall ask you to do as I have done in the name of REVOLUTION.' Your Warrior Father, Hannibal Tirus Afrik. UMOJA 12-26-72." The quotation is the title given to a book Emory Douglas wrote for the Black Panther Party, and was there claimed as an old Cuban proverb. |
