Harvey Oak
A misshapen, tall black oak standing near a sidewalk leading to the Camp Randall Sports Center on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The center's ribbed roof is on the right. There is a cannon on a concrete pad at lower right. The oak tree was dedicated to Wisconsin Governor Louis Powell Harvey, who drowned while in office during the Civil War. He was on a trip to visit the camps and hospitals of Wisconsin soldiers and fell into the Tennessee River when attempting to transfer from one steamboat to another. The tree was taken down in the 1990s. |
