Muir Locust

A man and three women standing at the base of a large tree, identified as the Muir Locust. The tree grew along Observatory Drive on the University of Wisconsin campus and was identified with the environmentalist John Muir. Muir wrote in The Story of My Boyhood and Youth of his experience standing under the black locust tree in June 1863, when he was given a lesson in botany by a fellow student named Griswold. The tree was removed shortly after this photograph was taken. |
