Montello Cottonwood

A large cottonwood, named Wisconsin's largest tree in the 1970's, standing on Underwood Avenue in front of a two-story granite faced house. There is a cell phone tower in the background. Several large limbs of the tree have been broken, leaving an irregular crown. Most of the damage to the tree was caused by strong winds when a tornado passed through Montello on June 23, 2004. |

Digital file from Jim Slattery. Image ID: 127651 shows the tree prior to the wind damage. In 2016, the tree was still listed as the seventh largest in the state of Wisconsin, although that determination was based on measurements taken in 2000. |
