The Montello Cottonwood

A large, nearly symmetrical cottonwood standing on the front lawn of a granite-clad colonial revival house on Underwood Avenue (Highway 23). A small sign attached to the trunk of the tree describes it as Wisconsin's largest tree, a distinction it held in the 1970s. There are numerous other trees on the snow-covered lawn. Several large branches of the cottonwood have been lost to high winds in the decades since this image was created. |
