The Phelps Oak
An unidentified man, probably H.M. Phelps, posing with his right hand resting on the massive trunk of a bur oak which grew on the Phelps farm three miles west of Fox Lake. When officially recorded by Walter Scott of the Wisconsin Conservation Department, the tree measured 14 feet in circumference, stood 88 feet tall, and had a spread of 108 feet. The tree was toppled in a wind storm September 11, 1964. |

This image appeared on the cover of the October, 1952 issue of the Wisconsin Conservation Bulletin, a publication of the Wisconsin Conservation Department, now the Department of Natural Resources. It was published in Allison's 1982 book Wisconsin's Famous and Historic Trees, p. 74, and in the 2005 second edition of that book, retitled Every Root an Anchor, p. 64. |
