Cram/Houghton Blaze Tree
A segment of the trunk of a pine bears the scars of a "blaze" carved with an ax and bearing the inscription: "XIX T. J. Cram, D. Houghton Aug 11, 1841." Cram and Houghton were surveyors marking the northeastern boundary of the Wisconsin Territory. The tree stood in Vilas County and was cut by loggers who preserved the blaze. The artifact was donated to the Wisconsin Historical Society by John B. Mann of Minocqua. |
