Presidential Political Campaign Buttons

Presidential Political Campaign Buttons | Historical Object | Wisconsin Historical Society
Framed assortment of buttons, and a few stamps, representing the presidential election between Dwight Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson in 1956. A few of the smaller buttons represent Eisenhower's campaign for the senate in 1954. Most are typical round buttons. Two are lenticular, or flasher, buttons; one which shifts between an image of Ike and Nixon (his running mate), and the other shifts between an image of Stevenson and words reading: "Madly for Adlai." Two buttons near the bottom read: "We want Mamie," and "We want Pat too," the wives of Ike and Nixon. One pin is in the shape of a simple shoe with a hole in it. This became a common symbol used by both the Democrats and Republicans after an image of Stevenson was taken where he sat crossed-legged so a hole in his shoe was visible. Republicans made fun of the image, such as the button with an image of the shoe reading: "Don't let this happen to you! Vote for Ike!," while the Democrats used it to portray Stevenson as a common man, a man of the people and common workers.
