Remembering James
Still life of a stuffed bear, a knitted ball, and children's shoes. The stuffed bear has a ring in his nose, with a chain attached. Handwritten on reverse: "The Guardian, Jan. Still Life, 329, C.A. Peterson, Scandinavia, Wis." Caption in book reads, "The photos on the next few pages include pictures of James, son of Carl and Christine, born October 31, 1912. James died October 30, 1916, one day before his fourth birthday after falling into a washtub full of boiling water when his mother was washing clothes. This tragedy was never talked about, since Christine thought it was her fault. I wasn't aware of James since there were no pictures of him at her house. These photos were only brought out after she died in 1967." |
