Map or Atlas
A Map of Virginia and Maryland.

Map of Virginia and Maryland, based on John Smith's 1612 map and Augustine Herman's 1673 seminal map. It shows borders, counties, Native American land, tribes, and villages, European settlements, mountains, forests, swamps, bays, and rivers, with north oriented towards the right. The English coat of arms and crown appears above the scale in the upper left corner. Angels, fruit, and a baroque style frame decorates the title cartouche. Two large pieces of text sit on the back of the map: "The Description of Maryland," and "The Description of Virginia." These explain the colonial history, climate, land, animals, Native Americans, and present government of each colony, particularly aimed at attracting more English immigrants to the regions. |

Map and text from John Speeds Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain. Although authorship of this map and the atlas from which it came are attributed to John Speed based on his work, Francis Lamb (the engraver) deserves mention and credit as Speed had been dead for nearly fifty years before this map was engraved for the 1676 re-issue and expansion of Speed's 1611 atlas. |
