Nova Virginiae Tabula

Nova Virginiae Tabula | Map or Atlas | Wisconsin Historical Society
Map of Virginia depicting the discoveries detailed by John Smith in his exploration of the region. It shows Jamestown, Native American tribes and villages, mountains, forests, and rivers, with north oriented towards the right. Small Maltese crosses mark the limits of Smith's personal exploration, beyond these crosses Smith relied on Native American accounts (a feature from the original map that Blaeu incorporated into his edition). The British coat of arms sits next to a key which distinguishes the ordinary Native American villages from those which hold rulers. The key itself is topped with a feathered hat. Underneath the key stands a Native American man dressed in furs, holding a club and bow. In the upper left corner sits an illustration of the Powhatan chief and his subjects in a longhouse. The chief sits in the middle on a bench wearing a feathered headdress and smoking a pipe, while men and women sit on mats on the floor around a boiling pot on top of a fire.
