Map or Atlas
The Province of Maine: From the Best Authorities
Map of Maine, showing a few cities, harbors, hills, mountains, lakes, and rivers. A road runs from Pownalboro south to Portsmouth harbor, and the boundary line between the United States and British territories is clearly labeled. Nearly all of the settlements sit along the southern coast. However, one interesting feature appears at the western end of a chain of mountains. It is labeled "car. place" or carrying place; a portage between two unnamed rivers. |

One of the earliest maps of the province of Maine. From Mathew Carey's American Edition of Guthrie's Geography. The edition is unknown, though the lack of a page number in the upper right corner suggests this map is from the 1795 (first) edition. |
