![Mollusks A hand-colored etching of the shells of mollusks collected by members of the Perry expedition, described and named by physician and conchologist John Clarkson Jay (1808-1891). Figures 1 through 6 depict variations of the land snail <i>Helix simodae</i>, accepted name <i>Euhadra peliomphala simodae</i>, collected near Shimoda. Figures 7, 8 and 9 are also land snails, <i>Helix perryi</i>, accepted name <i>Euhadra quaesita perryi</i>, collected near Yedo (Tokyo). Figures 10, 11 and 12 are the pond snail <i>Lymnea</i> [sic] <i>japonica</i>, accepted name <i> Radix japonica</i>, also collected near Shimoda. Figures 13, 14 and 15 are <i>Bullia perryi</i>, accepted name <i>Volutharpa perryi</i>, and were collected from the Bay of Yedo (Tokyo Bay). Figures 16 and 17 depict <i>Purpura sepentrionalis</i>, accepted name <i>Nucella lamellosa</i>.
