Sea Scallop
An etching, labeled Conchology Plate IV which depicts the exterior, Figure 1, and interior of the shell of the scallop identified as Pecten yessoensis, current accepted name Patino or Mizuhopecten yessoensis. There are Japanese characters written on the shell in Figure 2. The specimen was collected at Hakodate, Hokkaido (Yesso Island) by members of the Perry expedition and was later described and named by physician and conchologist John Clarkson Jay (1808-1891). |
