Two Mollusks
An etching, labeled Conchology Plate III, depicts two large mollusks collected by members of the Perry expedition. They were described and named by physician and conchologist John Clarkson Jay (1808-1891). Figures 1 and 2 are a freshwater mussel, Dipsas plicatus, accepted name Cristaria plicata, collected at Shanghai. In describing Figure 2, Jay reports, "pieces of lead [are] inserted under the mantel of the animal; in a short time the leaden ornaments are found covered with pearly matter as seen in the figure." Cristaria plicata is used commercially in the cultured pearl industry. Figures 3 and 4 are the scallop Pecten yessoensis, accepted name Patino or Mizuhopecten yessoensis, and was collected near Hakodate, Hokkaido (Yesso Island), Japan. |
