Map or Atlas
A New and General Map of the Southern Dominions Belonging to the United States of America: Viz North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia with the Bordering Indian Countries, and the Spanish Possessions of Louisiana and Florida
Extremely detailed map of the south-eastern states, south from Virginia and east of the Mississippi River. It shows roads and paths, cities, towns, forts, mines, Native American land, swamps, mountains, rivers, and lakes. Numerous notes appear throughout the maps on various subjects, such as one just above the northern border of East Florida which reads "Great swamp of quaphenoga whose highland is inhabited by an old Apalachean tribe who keep the avenue secret." The western border of North Carolina and Georgia is left open, but south Carolina appears fully enclosed and divided into six precincts. Two inset maps sit above the title cartouche: "Plan of Charlestown" and "Plan of St. Augustine." The title cartouche features a decorative wreath and vine frame. |
