Amplissimæ Regionis Mississipi seu Provinciæ Ludovicianæ: A R. P. Ludovico Hennepin Francisc Miss in America Septentrionali anno 1687 | Map or Atlas | Wisconsin Historical Society
Detailed, ornate, and comprehensive map of America from the east coast to present day Texas. Numerous features appear throughout the map, including Native American land and villages, forts, missions, cities, towns, mines, the routes of various explorers to 1716, forests, prairies, marshes and swamps, mountains, lakes and rivers. The topographical features are shown pictorially, along with clustered illustrations of huts for certain villages or settlements. An small vignette of Native Americans hunting long horned buffalo extends under the Ohio River. Annotations and notes provide information on various regions and explorers, including one on the tip of Florida which claims it is inhabited by cannibals ("anthropophag"). Three large illustrations adorn the map. In the lower right a buffalo stands between a Native man and woman, while a bird sits on a rock in front, and a rat hangs from the decorative border. In the upper left, the title cartouche hangs on a buffalo skin, Father Louis Hennepin stands with a child and a European man on the right, while a naked man holds a pipe on the left. Below the title cartouche, beavers work under Niagara Falls.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Originally issued in 1720, this popular map was re published in numerous atlases throughout the eighteenth century; the lack of Homann's usual "cum privilegio" below the title suggests this copy was printed later in the 1700s. Due to the repeated imagery of the American buffalo, this map is more commonly referred to as the Buffalo Map. Homann based his map on the information of L'Isle's maps, and the missions in the northern Mississippi valley and Great Lakes region of Father Louis Hennepin in 1687 who is memorialized in the title cartouche and title.
