Partie de l'Amérique Septentrionale: Qui Comprend le Cours de l'Ohio, la Nlle. Angleterre, la Nlle York, le New Jersey, la Pensylvanie, le Maryland, la Virginie, la Caroline | Map or Atlas | Wisconsin Historical Society
Map of colonial America, showing the lands north of South Carolina and west of the Mississippi River. An inset map of the Carolinas and Georgia sits in the upper left corner. A decorative rococo floral frame borders the title cartouche. The colonies, regions, counties, towns, cities, Native American land, forts, mountains, lakes, and rivers are all labeled. Based heavily on John Mitchell's groundbreaking map of North America, Vaugondy portrays a rather accurate account of the river systems and the Great Lakes region. The borders of Virginia, North and South Carolina make this particular copy fascinating. The engraved dotted lines, and the words "Virginie," "Caroline Septentrionale," and "Caronline Meridionale" stretch to the Mississippi River, suggesting this map is the second state, re-issued after the Treaty of Paris which ended the French and Indian War in 1763. However, the colorist appears to have ignored these new borders, and limited Virginia and the Carolinas to the Appalachian mountains.
