Two Eels of Japan
A hand-colored lithograph of two eels, created from drawings and descriptions of specimens collected by members of the Perry expedition. No. 1, top, was collected near Shimoda and is labeled Muraena kidako; the current accepted name is Gymnothorax kidako. James Carson Brevoort, who prepared the published notes on the collected fish specimens, recognized No. 2, bottom, as a previously undescribed species, which he named Anguilla myriaster which has been modified to Conger myriaster. The specimen was collected near Hakodate. |
