Two Salmon of Japan
A hand-colored lithograph of two species of salmon collected near Hakodate, Japan by members of the Perry expedition. James Carson Brevoort later studied the specimens and the drawings made by the artists in the field and recognized that these species had not previously been documented in the western scientific literature. He named the fish at top (No. 1) Salmo perryi to honor Commodore M. C. Perry. The current accepted name is Parahucho (or Hucho) perryi. Brevoort named No. 2, bottom, Salmo masou; masou is phonetically a Japanese word for salmon. The current accepted name is Oncorhynchus masou masou. |

Perry, United States Navy, Volume II. opp. page 257. Brevoort writes (p. 274) with regard to Parahucho perryi, "The Salmo herewith figured has been named after the able commander of the United States Japan Expedition, to whose efforts alone we owe the scanty yet interesting zoological collections and drawings, made under disadvantageous circumstances, while the squardron was in those distant seas." |
