Three Fish of Japan
A hand-colored lithograph of three colorful fish collected and drawn by an unnamed artist on Perry's expedition to Japan. No. 1 is identified as Serranus urodelus, current accepted name Cephalopholis urodeta and was collected in the Lew Chew Islands (Okinawa). No. 2 is Identified as Iulis (Julis) quadricolor, and is probably Scarus quinquevittatum, synonym Thalassoma quinquevittatum. It was collected near Shimoda. No. 3 is identified as Iulis (Julis) lutescens; current accepted name Thalassoma lutescens. No. 4 is a detail of the mouth and teeth of Thalassoma lutescens. The specimen was collected near Napha, Lew Chew Islands, now Naha, Okinawa. |
