Four Fish of Japan

A hand-colored lithograph prepared from drawings made by draftsman Hamilton Patterson of four fish collected on Perry's expedition to Japan. They are numbered from the bottom. No. 1 is identified as Clinus polyactocephalus, correctly, Blennius polyactocephalus and was collected near Hakodate. No. 2, the orange bellied butterfish, was also collected near Hakodate and is identified as Gunnellus dolichogaster, accepted names Gunnellus crassispina or Pholis crassispina. No. 3 is identified as Belone gigantea, synonym Tylosurus crocodilus and was collected in the waters of the Lew Chew Islands (now Okinawa). No. 4, Scomberesox saira, synonym, Cololabris saira, was collected near Shimoda. |
