Map or Atlas
Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississipi [i.e. Mississippi]: Dressée sur un Grand Nombre de Mémoires Entrautres sur Ceux de Mr. le Maire
First edition of L'Isle's landmark map of North America. It covers America from the Rio Grande to the Atlantic Ocean, showing boundaries, the colonies, cities, settlements, Native American lands and villages, marshes, prairies, mountains, rivers, and lakes. The map also shows numerous routes of various explorers such as De Soto, Cavelier, Tonty, Moscoso and Denis, along with numerous annotations describing the discoveries, and other features. An inset map in the lower right corner shows a detailed depiction of the mouth of the Mississippi River and surrounding area in the Gulf of Mexico. The map includes a small key in the Golf of Mexico. |

This is perhaps the most significant map of the Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes of the 18th century. It greatly improved the cartographic knowledge of these areas, and was the first to present a roughly accurate account of the river's length, and relatively accurate placement of the Mississippi's tributaries (including the Wisconsin River as "Ousconsing River"). It is also the first map to name Texas, though only in a small notation ("mission de los Teijas") which appears below a city labeled as Cenis. The second edition was the first map to label New Orleans. |
