Map or Atlas
Amérique ou Nouveau Continent Dressée sur les Nouvelles Rélations Découvertes et Observations
Map of North and South America showing regions, colonies, cities and settlements, rivers, lakes, and Native American land. Near the bottom left an inset map depicts the north west portion of America and highlights the fabled North West Passage. This inset is based mostly on discoveries made by the (fictional) Admiral de Fonte, but discoveries by other explorers also appear. An elaborate border surrounds the title cartouche, depicting the sun, large flowers, a turtle, and two Native Americans dressed in feathers around a fire and smoking from a pipe. The map itself is bordered on the right and left side by text describing the various regions, territories, and colonies of the Americas. |
