Map or Atlas
A Map of the New Continent According to its Greatest Diametrical Length from the River la Plata to Beyond the Lake of the Assiniboils
This map portrays North and South America at a very unusual angle, with north oriented towards the upper right corner. Colonies, Native American land, a few settlements, and some rivers and lakes are labeled. Although unlabeled, a string of lakes connected by a river spreads from Lake Superior to the Pacific Ocean; the hoped for North West Passage. The map itself is bare of adornment, but an elaborate border of flowers and grapes surround the title cartouche in the lower left corner. |

This map was originally printed for 'The Gentleman's Magazine,' December 1758 issue. Although not strictly legible, part of the accompanying text in the magazine appears at the bottom half of our copy of the map. This is not an uncommon mistake, and happens when printers rest a newly printed page on top of another before the ink has time to fully dry. |
