Map or Atlas
The Theatre of War in North America: With the Roads and a Table of the Distances
This was one of the first maps available for the general British populace featuring America during the Revolutionary War. It includes forts, cities, topographical features, boundary lines, and roads. The cartographer included a distance chart in the lower right corner of the map, particularly handy as many British citizens did not fully understand the vastness of the colonies. Below the map, blocks of texts describe the American colonies. These notes primarily discuss the boundaries, main towns and cities, and principle features (such as soil, trade, colleges, and forts) of the colonies. The language is neutral; the author only references the war in occasional mentions of towns or forts being "in the hand of the Provincials." While most of the notes are fairly ordinary, and expected of a political and topographical map, there are a few oddities, such as in the description of Brunswick in New Jersey as "remarkable for the number of its beautiful women." In the bottom middle sits a table of the American population. The table shows both the overall population of the colonies, as well as a column labeled "Men (White and Black) able to bear Arms." |
