A Map of the West-Indies or the Islands of America in the North Sea; with ye Adjacent Countries; Explaning [sic] what Belongs to Spain, England, France, Holland, &c.
| A map of the countries and islands surrounding the Gulf of Mexico. The hand-colored borders separate the territories of England, France, Spain, and Holland, a typical theme of Herman Moll's cartography as he often stresses British claims and policy abroad. The map is fairly detailed and includes not just the names of various cities, geographical features, and countries, but information on trade winds, production, Indian settlements, and various other factoids. The map includes five inset maps: "A Draught of St. Agustin and its Harbour"; "La Vera Cruz"; "A Draught of ye Bay & Citty of Havana"; "A Draught of ye Citty of Cartagena, its Harbour & Forts"; and "The Bay of Porto Bella." It also includes an ornate and detailed birds eye view of the City of Mexico; another typical trope of Herman Moll who decorates his work with illustrations. |
