Drawing
Opening Day Fishing Season
Imaginative pen-and-ink drawing of a large muskelunge (muskie), badge number 315 and clad in cowboy boots with spurs, that takes control with his six-shooter revolver in a crowded saloon of drinking, dancing and gambling fish. The music is provided by fish on banjo and piano. This drawing appeared in the Capital Times on May 5, 1984 with Sid's accompanying poem: "I've taken fish where I find them, close to home, and traveling afar, I've had the thrills of line breakin', and parties on the west sand bar. I've fished the fast and slow waters, and in the water, your stomach would rust, Lone Ranger, John Lawton, hauntin' the streams, he'd lose a swamp battle, and bite the dust. Legends come and go with the fishin', tales that make Paul Bunyan shrink, before fish all men are equal, to catch them, you go where they drink." Sid's authorship is in the lower right corner. |

Sid Boyum annually created an "Opening Day" drawing to promote the first day of the general fishing season, published from 1963 to 1989 in the Capital Times and the Wisconsin State Journal. In exchange, Sid would receive copies of the print to distribute on his own. For Sid's handwritten poem, see Mss 1213 Box 1, Folder 4. |
