Drawing
Opening Day Fishing Season
Imaginative pen-and-ink drawing of a man sitting at a table (inscribed PAM) and playing cards with a salmon and a muskelunge (muskie). The muskelunge appears to be passing an ace of diamonds to the trout under the table with his tail. On the back wall are a framed print and a fish stretcher below a rod with many lures. This card game is framed on all sides with fishing reels. Outside the left reel is a margin of ducks flying, a kingfisher sitting in a cattail, a dragonfly resting on grass, and a stash of fishing equipment and a pair of die denoting the chance of a game (cards or fishing). The bottom edge is a water scene of aquatic life like crayfish and shells. This drawing appeared in the Wisconsin State Journal on May 11, 1973 with Sid's caption: "As long as we are all antsy as fish out of water waiting for the season to open, what could be more relaxing than an honest game of stud poker with two worth protagonists. It is obvious that card sharks are not all sharks." He adds "Good luck and good fishing." Sid's authorship is in the lower right corner included with his hand signature and the year "89." |
