Sikorsky S-29-A

Right side view of a Sikorsky S-29-A sitting on a runway. The airplane was powered by two 400 hp Liberty L-12 engines. The tail identifier reads: "2756." Painted on the side is: "Cigars United," "First Flying United Cigar Store," "Largest in the World Because We Serve the People Best." The airplane was sold to Roscoe Turner in 1926, who used it to advertise for various companies. Here, the S-29-A is being used as part of an advertising campaign for United Cigars where it served as a "Flying Cigar Store" stocked with tobacco products and other small items such as gum, watches, and playing cards. The airplane flew across the U.S. selling these products in various towns and cities. It was bought and reworked by Howard Hughes in 1928 for his film "Hell's Angels" in which it was used as a German Gotha bomber. |
