Ceylon Childs Lincoln
Quarter plate ferrotype/tintype of Ceylon Childs Lincoln. Full-length seated pose facing 45 degrees to the right, with left arm on cloth covered table and right hand on knee. His cap sits on the table, and under his feet is a striped rug. Born April 18, 1850 in Naperville, IL. In 1856 he moved to Wautoma, WI and in 1863, at the age of 14, enlisted in the Union Army (35th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry--Company D) until Dec. 1, 1865. He was later employed as a printer and wrote "Personal Experiences of a Wisconsin Raftsman" (see Wisconsin Historical Society Proceedings, 1910, p. 180). He married Melinda J. Duncan of Richford in 1870; became an early settler of Tomahawk in 1887; and in 1895 was appointed a janitorship in the Museum of the State Historical Society and served until 1909. |
