Margaret McGuire, Alice in Dairyland at Wisconsin Centennial State Fair
Alice in Dairyland, Margaret McGuire, speaks into a WHA microphone in the Dairy Building at the Wisconsin Centennial State Fair. She is surrounded by a crowd of mostly women and girls. In the background on the left the words: "The Story of Dairyland" are mounted on the wall. On the right is the "Mechanical Alice." After Margaret won the competition, the Dairy Committee decided to have a 10-foot tall mechanical version made of her as Alice. Sculptor John Neidhart created the statue's head and based its features on Margaret. The rest of the body was built in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Upon its completion, the mechanical Margaret was dressed in the same "Alice in Dairyland" prize-winning costume. Besides raising her arms and turning her head, the statue could also sit down on her oversized throne. |
