Portrait of social worker Helen Hilton, 1919 U.W. graduate, taken upon her retirement from the city welfare department. She had worked more than 40 years as a social worker, mostly in Madison and Wisconsin for federal, state, city, and private agencies. Before then she worked in Alabama, Minnesota, Mo., Mass., West Virginia, Tenn., New Mexico, and northern Wisconsin. When she started work in 1930 for the state welfare department, she was one of only six social workers who covered the entire state. |
