Shafer Pharmacy

View of Williamson Street from inside Shafer Pharmacy. The owner, Hugh Hessman, is standing by a large arched window looking out onto the street. He wears glasses and a white shirt. Flower pots are sitting on the ledge, and a rack of books is on the right. A neon sign in the window reads: "Prescriptions" (backwards) with the Rx symbol decorating the top of the window. Outside a man in jeans, t-shirt, and a headband is walking by on the sidewalk. Behind him are two mailboxes. A van is driving by on the street, with an advertisement for X-Pert Auto (part of the business name is obscured by the man). A gas station is across the street. |

Caption on the bottom of the frame reads: "'I didn't know too much about Williamson Street until 8 years ago. At that time we had another store in a deteriorating part of town,' says Hugh Hessman of Shafer Pharmacy, 1255 Williamson. 'Of course, there were some who thought Williamson Street was in the same situation but we thought it was on the way up. In these eight years since we've seen some big changes for the better. That's due to a lot of reasons. The city has been a big help making loans available to businessmen and a lot of credit goes to Commonwealth and the Madison Development people. The business association has been held together by them. I think the future of the area is coming right along.'" |
