Harrose Hall
Hand-colored postcard of the "Residence of H.G. Selfridge, Lake Geneva, Wis." The large Tudor influenced house has three stories and features a tall chimney and striped awnings. A stone wall partially obscures the first floor. H.G. Selfridge, a native of Ripon, Wisconsin, was a retail magnate who earned a fortune in Chicago and in 1908 moved to London where he established the department store which bears his name. He built this house on Geneva Lake in 1899, and named it Harrose Hall, combining a portion of his first name with that of his wife, the former Rose Buckingham. Selfridge owned the house until 1922; it was demolished in 1975. |
