Fire in the Wisconsin Building
A policeman, center, keeping an eye on bystanders as firemen on ladders fight a fire at the Wisconsin Building on State Street. The building housed the Commercial National Bank and Keeley's Palace of Sweets, also known as "The Pal." A garland of evergreens is hanging from wires strung along utility poles above the sidewalk. Several men are leaning out of a second story window on the right. |

This photograph is from an album created by Ernst Schmidt during his time as a University of Wisconsin student. Schmidt was the grandson of Chicago brewer Conrad Seipp. An article on the fire was published in the Wisconsin State Journal on January 13, 1914.
