Train Derailment

Slightly elevated view from bank of workmen gathered at the site of a train derailment. The man in suit and hat at far left is identified as a police officer. Damaged undercarriages are behind him. In the background is a grain elevator; to the left of the elevator is a derrick brought in to lift the train cars. The cars are nearly upright despite having lost their undercarriages. |

Ernst Schmidt provided a typed description of the series of photographs he took of the train wreck: "On Thursday evening, May 29, 1941, about 10:45 P. M. a freight train going through to Chicago from Madison jumped the track for some reason or other at Zenda, Wisconsin. About 20 cars of this train went off of the track. Some of them were very badly smashed. The next day, May 30th or Memorial Day, about the biggest crowd Zenda ever had was there to see the wreck. It was estimated that there were 10,000 people there on that day. I was over there about 3 P.M. in the afternoon and took the pictures #'s 20, 21 through 28. The accident happened right about at the Railroad Station, that is about 1000 feet to the west of the station in a little gulley, so that everyone had a good opportunity to see the accident." |
