A Summer Sitting Room
An informal group is seated under an awning in the garden of the Fairchild house at 302 Monona Avenue (later renamed Martin Luther King Boulevard). Pictured are Mrs. Fairchild, Mary Fairchild Morris, Sallie Fairchild Bacon, Lucien M. Hanks and others. This garden party photograph is one of a series. The table in the background is set with dishes, napkins, cups and glasses. The house was constructed in 1850 at 302 South Wisconsin Avenue (renamed Monona Avenue in 1877) near Lake Monona, by Jarius Fairchild and was later substantially altered with additions. After the Civil War, the house became the home of Fairchild's son, Lucius, Civil War hero, Wisconsin governor (1866-72) and foreign diplomat. During his six years as governor, the Fairchild House was the state's executive residence, as no such property was then owned by the state. The residence was therefore a focus of Madison's political and social life during the last half of the 19th century. |
