Mary Layton Cottages
Cottages in the United Kingdom that Frederick Layton established in memory of his mother Mary Layton. The exterior of the three cottages is identical and they are spaced equidistantly. There is a woman standing in the doorway of each cottage. A woman stands in the garden between two of the cottages, and a man stands in the garden of the cottage on the far right. There is a black dog sitting in the street on the far right. Along the street in front of the cottages is a brick wall with a wrought iron fence on top and a gate in the center. |

Note from Frederick Layton: The end one to the right is on the same grounds as the old cottage was where I was born May 18, 1827. I bought the ground and the old cottages and built the Mary Layton Cottages for charity farm laborers and their wives according to the charity laws of England. Each one has fruit and vegetable garden, well-kept, and free cottage and 5 shilling English. The cost was fifteen thousand dollars. |
