First to Fly — Almost Flying

Wilbur Wright gliding down the steep slope of Big Kill Devil Hill at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Much of the Wright Brothers' success derived from the fact that they successfully mastered control problems using gliders before attempting powered flight. The original glass negative of this image from the Wright Brothers Collection at the Library of Congress was damaged in 1913. This early undamaged vintage print is from the collection of Arthur Pratt Warner, the first man to fly in Wisconsin. It is not known how Pratt obtained the print, although it is known that he attended several exhibitions in 1910 at which Wright planes were flown. Possibly it was given to Warner at that time. |
