Birthday Tablescape, Scenes I, II, and III
Six scenes of miniature landscapes and interiors comprise a tablescape honoring six decades in the life of Emma Seipp Schmidt on the occasion of her sixtieth birthday. A poem glued to the reverse of the photographs explain the scenes. In this photograph are, from left to right, scenes I, II, and III. At left, scene I (the 1870's) depicts the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. During the 1880's, Emma, with her mother and sisters, spent several years living in Wiesbaden, Germany. The center scene recalls their time in Germany, with a village of small wooden houses, carved wooden figures and trees all from the Erzgebirge region of Germany. At far right (the 1890's), a stork on a pole watches over the nursery in the Schmidt home at e3328 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago. The nursery has miniature beds, a dresser, chairs and a sewing machine. There are dolls representing the three Schmidt children and their nanny. Real foliage and flowers complete the scenes. In the background is large stained glass window, an aquarium on a stand, live plants and a birdcage. |
